A way out

I have finally figured a way out of corporate slavery. The problem is sacrifice. What are you willing to give up to have what you want. What are you willing to trade for freedom? The problem is also that the cost of living in california is high. How could I live someplace for free or as near to free as possible without living with my parents again? I got the idea from tumbleweedhouses.com.

My house is way to big for two people. Way bigger than we need. In our backyard we have what most people would call a workshop/shed. It’s drywalled though and built like a normal room. I am going to convert it into a cottage, complete with a fireplace, a sleeping loft, kitchen and bathroom. I will build it with convenient storage areas for all of the things I need, and am going to simplify my life. Imagine: no mortgage or rent to pay and 60 thousand dollars a year to spend on things that are important to us. My plan is simple:

1: transform the “man-house” as we call it, into a Jethouse Cottage.
This involves (repairing the roof, adding siding, a new door, moving the gas line that currently runs to the building, installing a better window, replacing most of the drywall, installing flooring, separating my utilities, filing permits, installing a toilet, a shower, and two sinks, installing an on demand hot water heater, painting and furnishing the new place. )
2: rent out primary residence, this involves, finishing a bunch of stuff the last owner never did, which is like a small hole in the ceiling, which hasn’t been a problem because we have two roofs, a flat one and a pitched one, and two attics. completing the trim, some basic landscaping, and doubling up on our appliances.

3: evenutally I may build a tumbleweed house and move into that, renting out my cottage for 350 to 450 depending on if I can find a young college student or something to rent it out. We do have two major universities near by Sac State and UC Davis, so it’s very possible. If I could do that, it would give me an income on the property of about 500 dollars a month. At that point, I may quit my job or take a part time job so that I can still keep my benefits and then launch a small company.

I’m working on one business currently which is Rich+Kate, home made soaps that are actually good for your skin and aren’t made with harsh detergents. I don’t expect to make anywhere near enough money from this to support myself, but it’s more about my quest for a perfect shave than anything else. Who knows though.. the other idea is still confidential. I think with the coming economy though, it will work out great for us. Life should be an adventure and right now it’s a total drag.
